Africa-Press – Ghana. Sunyani the Bono Regional capital remains calm with economic activities seemingly low, as churches prepare to usher in the New Year with night vigils.

During a visit on Wednesday, the Sunyani Central Business District (CBD), the Ghana News Agency (GNA) noticed that the brisk business activities that characterized the festive season were virtually absent.

Nonetheless, being the Sunyani main market day, where traders and buyers from elsewhere visited, buying and selling were progressing somehow at the Nana Bosoma Central Market.

Comparatively, some of the traders at the central market and the CBD enclave told the GNA market survey that sales were not good in the season with customer demand for rice, oil and other spices extremely low.

“The demand for rice and oil in particular wasn’t good at all in the season”, Madam Joyce Anima, a rice seller at the enclave stated.

She said she remained optimistic that sales would pick up on the New Year, saying that “many of my customers spent the Xmas at church conventions and retreats”.

A fowl and livestock seller, Seidu Abu shared similar sentiments and expressed the worry that the patronage of live birds and goats was discouraging in the season.

He said though the prices of the animals were reduced, sales were not good as compared to previous year’s Xmas.

Mr Abu said prices of goats and fowls were reduced, pegged between GHC800 and GHC1,100 as well as GHC90 GHC150 respectively, however sales were not encouraging in the season.

“In fact, sales were better last year than this year”, Mad Justina Awotwi, a provision shopkeeper at the CBD stated.

However, an attendant at a popular cold store at the CBD who spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity said the demand for frozen chicken, meat and pork “isn’t all that bad”.

Meanwhile, the GNA noticed that some churches in the capital had prepared and decorated their auditoriums for their congregants to usher in the New Year with night vigils.

Others had also rented public places for social gatherings like the Sunyani Jubilee Park and the Victory Park and prepared for worship and night vigils.

Interestingly, some popular drinking pubs situated at the shoulders of the Sunyani-Abesim highway had also prepared the grounds live-bands to welcome merry makers, as the New Year sets in.
