Africa-Press – Ghana. A total of 671 New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Keta constituency of the Volta Region, are expected to participate in upcoming presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
They would choose among five presidential aspirants which include Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
Mr Bernard Sukah, the Deputy Keta NPP Constituency Secretary, told the Ghana News Agency, that the election is expected to be held between 0800 to 1500 hours.
“The delegates to take part of the election comprise of former parliamentary candidate, constituency executives, council of Elders, patrons, electoral area coordinators, among others,” he said.
He said the elections would be held at the Vodza-Adzido Roman Catholic (VR) basic school in the constituency and urged all delegates to follow the voting procedures for smooth and successful primaries.
Mr Sukah noted that all security arrangements had been put in place for a peaceful and successful election and appealed to supporters of all aspirants to engage in clean campaigns devoid of insult and defamatory comments.
“The party has put in place measures to ensure a peaceful and transparent election, including the deployment of security personnel and the signing of a Peace Pact by the aspirants ahead of the election.”
He explained that the Keta Constituency election was part of the nationwide NPP presidential primaries, which would determine the party’s candidate for the 2028 general elections.
The outcome of the election is expected to shape the NPP’s future direction and its readiness for the 2028 general election with each aspirant embarking on nationwide campaign tours which reflected and demonstrated a renewed focus on grassroots engagement.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer, is seeking re-election, while Kennedy Agyapong and others are challenging him with strong grassroots support bases.
In the previous NPP flagbearer primaries, Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious, beating Kennedy Agyapong, who secured 37 per cent of the votes and upcoming election is expected to be a keenly contested one, with polls suggesting a close race between Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.
Other information gathered by Ghana News Agency, revealed that Dr. Bawumia’s campaign has received endorsements from 63 sitting NPP Members of Parliament and over 118 former parliamentary candidates while Kennedy Agyapong, on the other hand, has been presenting himself as the best aspirant to challenge and reshape the party presidential race in 2028.
The NPP has 211,849 delegates expected to vote nationwide, with no provision for proxy voting, and the party has urged its supporters to exercise patience and ensure a peaceful election process.
The Keta Constituency election is being closely watched, as it is seen as a bellwether for the party’s national performance, and the outcome of the election would provide valuable insights into the party’s internal dynamics.
The NPP has a history of retaining its first-time presidential candidates, and Dr. Bawumia is hoping to break this trend while other aspirants, on the other hand, are banking on their grassroots’ support to upset the odds.
The election would be a defining moment for the NPP, as it seeks to recapture electoral victory in 2028 and the party’s choice of flagbearer would be crucial in determining its chances of success.
