Africa-Press – Ghana. Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathisers in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, have called on party leadership to iron out internal differences ahead of the 2028 general election.
The appeal comes after the party’s recent flagbearer primary, which saw Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious with 56.48 per cent of the votes to beat four other aspirants including Mr Kennedy Agyapong.
Mr Kwami Doe-Dala, a party supporter, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that there is the need for unity and discipline to be reinstalled within the party before 2028 general election approaches.
“It is clear that some of the aspirants together with their supporters after losing the internal primary are not happy and may have bitterness within; differences are inevitable, unity must prevail once collective decisions are made,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of unity and reconciliation and cited that the party’s past electoral setbacks were because of internal divisions.
He warned that persistent infighting could jeopardise the party’s chances in 2028.
He appealed to the party’s Council of Elders to echo the sentiments and resolve the differences for all members to rally behind Dr Bawumia and work towards a united front to enable the NPP to restructure to be in better positioned to win the 2028 general elections to regain power.
Mr Dela-Doe said: “Many of us the party members have concern about the seeming divisions within the leadership, the biggest challenge lies at the top level of the party, it is time to resolve all disagreements that will undermine efforts to consolidate support.”
Mr George Wedanu, another supporter said despite the concerns, the grassroots supporters remained hopeful, with many of NPP delegates expressing optimism about party unity and urged that all lingering tensions among senior campaign actors, which could impact the party’s performance in 2028 must be redress to position the party for victory.
He said Dr Bawumia’s victory has been seen as a mandate for him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections and the next steps would be crucial in determining the party’s trajectory towards the elections.
He stated that unity alone could not be enough to guarantee victory in 2028 and stressed that the party must first come out with a convincing policy, reconnect with ordinary Ghanaians, sell their options of restructuring the nation to the best to win back trust from the public.
He appealed to the national executives of the NPP to commence internal reforms that would aim at repositioning the party ahead of 2028 which should include the establishment of a policy secretariat to enhance the party’s policy development.
As the party prepares for 2028 elections, many party supporters are calling for internal balance and cohesion with a compelling message that resonates with Ghanaian voters while others believed that the outcome of the 2028 general election would depend on the party’s ability to unite and present a credible alternative to the current administration.
They said that the journey of the party to 2028 starts now, and the party must prioritise unity, discipline, and focus, and called on the supporters and flagbearer aspirants to pledge their support to demonstrate their commitment to these values of the party.
