Government Issues Travel Advisory for Ghanaians in Mexico

Africa-Press – Ghana. Ghanaians travelling to or residing in Mexico are to exercise extreme caution following recent security deterioration in parts of that country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration travel advisory.

Affected areas include Jalisco, Baja California, Colin’s, Guanajuato, Michoacan and Oaxaca.

The advisory follows an operation by Mexican security forces on February 22, 2026 that sparked widespread violence.

The operation reportedly resulted in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation drug Cartel.

According to the Ministry, the operation had triggered coordinated retaliatory attacks across multiple states, leading to armed clashes, arson of vehicles and road blockades.

The disturbances have caused casualties and significant disruptions to daily life.

The Government of Ghana is therefore advising Ghanaian nationals in the affected cities to refrain from non-essential travel and to remain vigilant in their movements.

It further encouraged citizens within the jurisdiction to maintain communication with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico, for any necessary consular assistance.

The Embassy’s hotline is +1 (202) 709 0568.

The Government of the Republic of Ghana conveyed its solidarity with the Government of the United Mexican States and expressed confidence in the ability of the Mexican authorities to restore calm and bring the situation under control.
