Ghanaian officials on Wednesday urged the country’s supervision authorities to protect the public purse from being dissipated by corrupt officers.
Minister of Planning George Gyan-Barffour made the remarks during a two-day internal audit conference.
The minister urged relevant government agencies, the media, and other civil society groups to be extra vigilant in their duties to safeguard the national purse, saying their vigilance could help in channeling limited financial resources into building schools, hospitals and potable water for the less privileged in Ghana.
These agencies, the minister said, should also focus on training their personnel to help save the nation from embezzlement, corruption, and acts that denied the nation of funds to fast-track socio-economic development.
Joseph Winful, the board chairman of the Internal Audit Agency, said they had reviewed operations of the board after consultations with allied bodies with oversight duties in protecting Ghana’s public purse, and urged the government to improve the salaries of internal auditors to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness.
