Africa-Press – Ghana. On Saturday, September 30th, 2023, Recycle Up! Ghana hosted a transformative program for women waste pickers at the Hub at Fumesua in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The event was designed to empower and support these women in their crucial roles within the waste management system.
The women were provided a platform for them to share valuable insights and experiences related to waste picking. This exchange allowed them to voice their concerns and challenges, fostering an environment of understanding and collaboration.
The sessions focused on financial management aiming at providing practical solutions to enhancing financial well-being as well as occupational health and safety training. Attendees gained insights into the risks associated with waste picking when proper personal protective equipment (PPE) are not utilised.
The facilitators of the training also emphasised safe work practices, including proper techniques for bending when picking up waste materials to prevent health complications. Hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing after handling waste, were discussed, along with the importance of overall health and well-being. Attendees were encouraged to prioritise their health and to schedule regular check-ups.
