Baba Yara Stadium Closure Affects GPL Preparations for Kotoko

Africa-Press – Ghana. The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been temporarily shut down by the National Sports Authority (NSA) for renovation works, with plans to reopen in time for Ghana’s home fixtures in the next international break which is set to be held in October.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s poor condition has been singled out by fans as the main factor behind Ghana’s first home defeat to Angola – the first in 24 years at the venue, a surprising turn of events given the stadium’s history of hosting successful matches for the last two decades.

Although NSA’s Deputy Director General Majeed Bawa disputed the widespread criticism of the pitch’s condition, the authority has nonetheless decided to shut down the stadium until October for maintenance and repairs, including restoration of facilities vandalized by irate fans following the recent match.

“Are they suggesting that the Angolans were playing in the sky? They are all footballers,

Those they assembled to play against the Black Stars are professionals, just like our team. They all played on the same pitch. CAF inspected and approved the pitch for the game.”

With the Baba Yara Sports Stadium closed for maintenance, the National Sports Authority (NSA) will now work with Asante Kotoko, the stadium’s home team in the Ghana Premier League, to secure an alternative venue for their GPL matches within the specified timeframe. The Porcupine Warriors had been scheduled to host consecutive home games against Nsoatreman FC on matchday 2 and Young Apostles on matchday 3, within the specified period, but will now need to find an alternative venue due to the stadium’s closure.

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season will start on Saturday, September 7, and conclude on Sunday, June 8, 2025,.

Kotoko’s home form was disappointing last season, as they secured just 30 points from a possible 51, placing them 4th from bottom in the home record standings of the just-ended GPL campaign.
