Africa-Press – Ghana. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has held a tax education and compliance workshop for officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) as part of efforts to deepen public awareness and boost domestic revenue mobilisation.
The event, themed “Transforming for Impact and Growth: Accelerating Domestic Revenue Mobilization Through Effective Compliance,” aimed to equip GNFS personnel with the knowledge to fulfill their tax obligations and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Speaking at the session, Mr. David Quarcoopome, Assistant Commissioner at the Domestic Tax Revenue Division of GRA, emphasized the importance of tax compliance in Ghana’s current economic climate.
He urged participants to take their civic responsibility seriously by understanding their tax obligations, particularly regarding personal income and investment returns.
“With the decline in international aid, the imposition of higher tariffs on exports to the U.S., and tough IMF bailout conditions, it is now up to us as citizens to take ownership of our country’s development, paying taxes is not just a legal obligation, it is a patriotic act,” Mr. Quarcoopome said.
He encouraged GNFS officers to keep and maintain accurate business records to enable the GRA to assess them correctly.
These records, he noted, should include financial statements, invoices, receipts, payment logs, bank statements, and documentation of all income and fixed assets.
Mr. Quarcoopome also reminded the fire officers that transparency and compliance were crucial for building a robust economy.
“Through tax compliance, we can ensure that Ghana has the resources to develop infrastructure, improve public services, and create jobs,” he added.
The interactive session also gave GNFS personnel an opportunity to ask questions and clarify their understanding of tax regulations, filing processes, and exemptions.
Participants expressed appreciation for the session, noting that it had demystified many aspects of taxation and equipped them with practical tools for compliance.
The workshop forms part of GRA’s broader campaign to expand the tax net by engaging various public institutions and promoting voluntary compliance.
