Africa-Press – Ghana. Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Watara, the Ashanti Regional Head of the Wangara community, has been appointed a member of the Ghana Hajj Board, a significant development that speaks volumes about his influence and dedication to the Muslim community in the region.
The Wangara people have played an instrumental role in the spread of Islam throughout the region, as well as in maintaining vital trade routes linking different areas, particularly those that are now part of present-day Ghana.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, Alhaji Watara said his appointment is a true testament to his unwavering commitment, humility, and exemplary leadership within the Muslim community and the Ashanti region.
Historically, the Wangara established numerous colonies and trading centers in regions that are now recognised as northern Ghana and along the banks of the Volta River, where they engaged in commerce that significantly impacted the local economies.
Their contributions to trade and cultural exchange were invaluable, and they played a pivotal role in the historical narrative of the Asante kingdom, influencing both its economic and social structures.
He said his extensive experience in community service, coupled with a deep sense of dedication to the welfare of others, has earned him immense respect not just from local constituents but also from the highest levels of government, including President Mr. John Dramani Mahatma.
“As a traditional leader, my inclusion on the Ghana Hajj Board is not merely a personal achievement but reflects the confidence vested in him to make meaningful contributions toward the organization and coordination of Hajj affairs in Ghana,” he added.
Alhaji Watara noted that his wisdom, coupled with his moral guidance, would undoubtedly bolster the Board’s efforts to ensure a smooth, transparent, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience for Ghanaian Muslims, which is essential for fostering unity and faith within the community.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Mahatma for the opportunity to serve the people, emphasizing his intention to contribute meaningfully to the efficient operation of the Hajj Board.
He said, his vision of enhancing the overall experience of pilgrims, ensuring that their spiritual journey was not only smooth but also enriching.
Alhaji Watara will be serving as a Board member from now until 2028, a term during which he aims to implement innovative strategies that will elevate the standards and practices associated with the Hajj pilgrimage for all Ghanaian Muslims.
