Africa-Press – Ghana. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has revealed that some women affected by the circulation of intimate images by a Russian national have become suicidal.
Speaking at a joint press briefing with Mr. Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, she said the Ministry had deployed clinical professionals to provide psychological and emotional support to victims, their families, relatives and children.
“Several of the women have formally filed complaints and are receiving support from the Ministry’s Victim Support Desk.
“And some have been quite suicidal about the whole issue,” she said.
Dr Lartey appealed for empathy and urged the public to exercise caution when discussing or sharing content related to the case.
She assured affected persons of strict confidentiality and encouraged those yet to reach out for help to do so for assistance on toll‐free numbers 0800 800 800, 0800 900 900, and 0800 111 222.
Mr George cautioned the public against sharing, downloading or redistributing intimate images allegedly recorded and circulated by the Russian national.
“Any individual, including Ghanaian citizens, who have shared, rebroadcast, or redistributed the illegal material are also liable for prosecution under the laws of Ghana,” he warned.
He explained that under Section 67 of the Cyber Security Act, 2020 (Act 1038), the non‐consensual recording, publication, or dissemination of intimate images constitutes a criminal offence.
“Consent to a private encounter does not amount to consent for publication,” he noted.
Both ministers reaffirmed Government’s commitment to protect citizens, reduce vulnerability and ensure that no one who violated the rights of Ghanaian women went unpunished.
They assured the public that Government remained resolute in safeguarding victims and pursuing accountability through all lawful channels.
