Africa-Press – Ghana. The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Ghana in collaboration with Ghana Para Athletics Association has started a nationwide scouting programme aimed at strengthening the National Para Athletics team.
The talent identification programme started in the Ashanti Region at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where para-athletes turned up to justify their inclusion.
The one-day talent identification exercise in Zone-1 drew around 29 people with impairments or disabilities from Kumasi and surrounding areas, including Offinso, Konongo, Beposo, Asante Mampong, and KNUST, among others.
The participants whose ages range between 15 years and 43 years were introduced to basic skills in Para Athletics events (track and field) such as wheelchair racing, 100 meters, 200 meters, Javelin, Shot put, and Discus. The exercise was led by Coach Suleman Aminu, former national athlete Patrick Yaw Obeng, and Paralympian Zinabu Issah.
Significantly, the exercise was very successful and the overarching objective achieved as 15 young athletes were discovered and selected at the end of the programme.
The Ghana Para Athletics Association expressed its profound gratitude to the National Lotteries Authority for their collaborative support towards the successful execution and delivery of the programme as well as executives of the NPC.
The next scouting event is expected to be held in the Central Region on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Cape Coast Stadium.
