Mahama Reiterates Commitment to Accra-Kumasi Expressway

Africa-Press – Ghana. President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment towards constructing a new Accra-Kumasi Expressway to ensure the rapid movement of goods and people between Ghana’s two major cities and beyond.

He noted that some people had expressed concern that with the announcement of the new Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, the ongoing dualisation of the old Accra-Kumasi Highway was going to be abandoned.

“This road is not going to be abandoned. Work is still ongoing,” the President stated during his second inspections tour of the ongoing construction works on the dualisation of the 33.4km Ofankor-Nsawam road.

The Project, which has now been placed under the Government’s Big Push Agenda for infrastructure development is being executed by one of Ghana’s leading construction firms, Maripoma Enterprise Limited.

President Mahama said even if one was going to the Eastern Region stretch, towards Apedwa, all the way towards Anyinam, there was work going on there.

He said the Government was going to add the Ashanti Region end of it so that they open up the road.

The President reiterated that the old Accra-Kumasi Highway would still be a very important road.

“But it will also exist alongside the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. So that for those who want to go very fast, for the big trucks that carry heavy cargo, instead of using this stretch, they can use that stretch. Of course, they’ll pay a toll to be able to use it,” he stated.

He noted that they had not abandoned the old Accra-Kumasi alignment.

“This alignment will still be available for road users. But we’re going to invest in a new Expressway that will take people to Kumasi faster than this old one has done,”

Touching on the Ofankor-Nsawam road dualisation project, President Mahama congratulated the consultants and the contractors for the pace at which work was going on since his last visit on September 3, 2025

“And I hope that you continue to push it the way you’ve done. I’m sure that if you do, we probably would take over the road earlier than you had said in July.”

He said exactly 90 days ago he was at the project site because of the outcry from the travelling public about the nature of that particular stretch of road, Ofankor-Nsawam road.

“And I’m quite impressed with the progress that has been made. I’ll urge the contractor to continue to push hard. The last time I came he assured us that by July next year he’ll be able to hand over the road.”

“But if I look at the progress being made, I’m sure that by April next year, if you guys push hard, you’ll be able to finish this road and hand it over so that we can use it.”

Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, thanked the President for the support he was giving the Big Push and all other road projects in the country.

He expressed the hope that the President would leave a legacy that all Ghanaians would be proud of.

Mr Mahama Abdulai, the Senior Project Manager, Maripoma Enterprise Ltd, underscored the Company’s commitment to executing the project on schedule.
