Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, on Tuesday swore in two new Members of Parliament (MPs), Mr Bernard Bediako Baidoo, MP elect for Akwatia Constituency and Professor Alidu Seidu, MP elect for Tamale Central Constituency.

They both represent the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr Baidoo won the Akwatia by-election with 18,199 votes, succeeding the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party MP, while Prof Seidu was declared the winner of the Tamale Central by-election after emerging unopposed, following the tragic death of Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, a former NDC MP, in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of discipline, humility, and hard work, advising the new MPs to approach their roles with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

He said, “Whether you are a professor or a farmer… you have come to a new school, and that school starts from the crèche.”

The Speaker highlighted the significance of understanding parliamentary procedures and the Constitution.

The two new MPs were presented with the Standing Orders of Parliament and the 1992 Constitution to guide them in their new roles.

Mr Baidoo’s victory in Akwatia marks a significant win for the NDC, with the party securing 54.30 per cent of the total votes cast, while Prof Seidu’s unopposed win in Tamale Central underscored the NDC’s strong presence in the region.

The current composition in terms of membership in the House now stands at 188 MPs for the Majority and 87 for the Minority Caucus.
