President Akufo-Addo says he is happy about the re-naming of University of Energy and National Resources.<\/p>\n
Plans by government to re-name the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) after the country\u2019s\u00a0Second Republic Prime Minister, Dr Abrefa Busia, has been met with fierce criticism from a section of Ghanaians.<\/strong><\/p>\n Social media is awash with sarcastic comments by Ghanaians, some suggesting many more schools will be renamed.<\/p>\n President Akufo-Addo over the weekend disclosed the decision by the Governing Council of the University when he attended a graduation ceremony there.<\/p>\n \u201cThe decision is an excellent one, which will receive the blessing of the President of the Republic, so that, once the parliamentary process has been completed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n President of IMANI\u00a0Africa, Franklin Cudjoe and US-based Ghanaian lawyer, Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kweku Azar, have joined in the commentary while the Minority in Parliament has condemned the move.<\/p>\n The University\u00a0is the third to be named after individuals known to belong to the United Party\/Dombo tradition from which the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)\u00a0was borne.<\/p>\n This comes after the University of Development Studies\u2019 Wa Campus was renamed after NPP\u2019s founding member, S. D. Dombo recently.<\/p>\n Also, a bill to rename the Navorongo campus after the late C. K. Tedam who was the Chairman of Council of Elders of the party is currently before Parliament.<\/p>\n The University of Mines and Technology has been renamed after a founder and the first president of the United Gold Coast Convention, Paa Grant.<\/p>\n And now, President Akufo-Addo\u00a0says he is happy about the re-naming of University of Energy and National Resources.<\/p>\n These developments have gotten social media talking.<\/p>\n Law Professor, Kwaku Asare, is calling for a policy on which institutions in the country can be re-named but says universities should not be included.<\/p>\n He says the country is becoming more and more divided over nothing and there is a need for consensus.<\/p>\n Oh his part, the President of IMANI Africa, described the move as a one-sided political decision.<\/p>\n Franklin Cudjoe says\u00a0although Dr Busia is a fine academic, the connection between him and the University of Energy and Natural Resources is a rather long shot.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Minority spokesperson on Education,\u00a0Peter Nortsu says they will resist the plan when it comes to Parliament for approval.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" President Akufo-Addo says he is happy about the re-naming of University of Energy and National Resources.
