Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The Minority Caucus in Parliament is calling for the immediate suspension of the government\u2019s agreement to accept deportees from the United States until it undergoes parliamentary ratification.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Caucus argued that the agreement undermines Ghana\u2019s sovereignty and could have diplomatic implications, making the country appear to endorse the US migration enforcement regime.<\/p>\n

Addressing a presser at Parliament House in Accra on Wednesday, led by Foreign Affairs Ranking Member Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Caucus criticised the government\u2019s actions, describing it as unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

Mr Jinapor hinted that aside the 11 that had already arrived in Ghana about 40 more are expected to arrive soon.<\/p>\n

It said the MoU\u2019s non-binding status and absence of parliamentary approval raised concerns about democratic accountability and the potential for abuse of power.<\/p>\n

Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution stipulates that: \u201cThe President may execute or cause to be executed treaties, agreements or conventions in the name of Ghana.<\/p>\n

(2) A treaty, agreement or convention executed by or under the authority of the President shall be subject to ratification by<\/p>\n

(a) Act of Parliament; or<\/p>\n

(b) a resolution of Parliament supported by the votes of more than one-half of all the members of Parliament.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is wide fear that the deportees might include hardened criminals, posing a threat to Ghana\u2019s security and stability.<\/p>\n

The government had said the decision to accept deportees is based on humanitarian principles and Pan-African solidarity, aiming to prevent further human suffering.<\/p>\n

Govrrnment officials assured that there was strict vetting procedure in place to ensure deportees do not pose security threats to Ghana.<\/p>\n

Human rights advocates argue the agreement enables the US to circumvent legal protections for asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants.<\/p>\n

The controversy surrounding the deportation deal has sparked debate about Ghana\u2019s sovereignty and the government\u2019s decision-making process.<\/p>\n

The Minority also criticised the ruling government\u2019s stance on Israeli\/Palestinian conflicts by supporting Palestine, noting that it breached Ghana\u2019s non-align position on international issues.<\/p>\n
