Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Tamale, Nov. 29, GNA \u2013The case involving the headmaster at the centre of the drowning of nine students in the River Oti at Saboba in the Northern Region has been adjourned to December 13, this year, to allow more time for the prosecution to conclude its investigations.<\/p>\n

When the case was called at the Tamale Magistrate Court on Monday, the prosecution prayed the court to adjourn the case as it was yet to conclude investigations into the matter.<\/p>\n

The defense counsel (lawyer for the accused) did not raise objection to the request neither did he also ask for bail for his client, Emmanuel Chingya, who has been charged with manslaughter. The Judge, therefore, granted the request of the prosecution. The accused, will, therefore, remain in prison custody and reappear on December 13.<\/p>\n

On Friday, November 12, between 1200hrs and 1300hrs GMT, nine students of the St. Charles Lwanga Junior High School (JHS) drowned in the River Oti when they were crossing the river from the Mwagbar bank to the Kpanjol bank, a distance of about 100 metres, in the Saboba District.<\/p>\n

The accident happened when the two canoes on which they were travelling collided and capsized. They were forms one and two students. One of the drowned students was a Togolese national.<\/p>\n

They were part of 31 students of the school, who earlier crossed the river to the Mwagbar village to harvest rice for the Headmaster of the school, Chingya.<\/p>\n

Following the accident, Chingya was arraigned at the Tamale Magistrate Court on Monday, November 15, charged with manslaughter, and was remanded into prison custody pending further investigations.<\/p>\n
