Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong> <\/span>Ghana\u2019s Legacy Crop Improvement Centre (LCIC) has acquired Malawi\u2019s Renaissance Seeds in a cross\u2010border deal.<\/b><\/p>\n

The company said it will \u201creshape the seed business landscape of sub\u2010Saharan Africa\u201d and expand its footprint across the continent.<\/p>\n

LCIC, Ghana\u2019s largest seed business headquartered at Legacy Square in Otareso in the Akuapem North District of the Eastern Region, announced the acquisition of Renaissance Seeds of Malawi in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency.<\/p>\n

The move had been described as a pivotal step toward LCIC\u2019s continental dominance in Africa\u2019s seed industry.<\/p>\n

Dr Amos Rutherford Azinu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Founder of LCIC, called the deal \u201ca watershed moment for Ghana\u2019s seed sector\u201d and one of the most significant cross\u2010border consolidations in the West and Southern African seed markets in recent years.<\/p>\n

Renaissance Seeds, widely recognised in Malawi for its tagline \u201cAkatswiri opanga MBEWU,\u201d meaning \u201cMasters of Seed Production,\u201d has been a central supplier of \u201chigh-quality, affordable seed varieties,\u201d that had supported smallholder farming communities across Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

Dr Azinu said that the Malawian company\u2019s \u201cdeep roots\u201d and trusted presence made the acquisition a natural strategic fit.<\/p>\n

Over the years, LCIC, founded with a stated mission of \u201cempowering Ghana\u2019s, and indeed Africa\u2019s, seed industry,\u201d has invested heavily in research, seed multiplication and capacity building, earning a reputation as \u201ca beacon of seed innovation in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Azinu noted that integrating Renaissance Seeds would effectively double its geographic footprint overnight by giving it immediate access to Southern African markets, distribution systems and technical expertise.<\/p>\n

The significance, he argued, extended beyond commercial expansion, as Africa remained heavily dependent on imported seed technologies.<\/p>\n

He further described the deal as the type of \u201chomegrown consolidation that keeps intellectual capital, profits, and agricultural destiny within African hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

By merging LCIC\u2019s research capacity with Renaissance Seeds\u2019 operational expertise, the company aims to speed up the development of climateresilient, locally adapted seed varieties as farmers in both countries face increasingly unpredictable weather linked to climate change.<\/p>\n

For farmers \u201cfrom Accra to Lilongwe,\u201d Dr Azinu stated, the acquisition would help expand access to commercial, high\u2010yielding seed varieties, strengthen technical advisory services and generate new employment across both Ghana and Malawi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis acquisition is not merely a business transaction; it is a declaration that Africa\u2019s seed industry belongs to Africans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said together with the Renaissance Seeds family, they would build a legacy that would feed generations to come.<\/p>\n

Renaissance Seeds would continue operating under its current brand while collaborating closely with LCIC on joint research initiatives.<\/p>\n

Industry observers see the deal as a potential model for deeper intra\u2010African agricultural consolidation aligned with the African Union\u2019s Agenda 2063 vision for a food\u2010secure, self\u2010reliant continent.<\/p>\n
