{"id":116837,"date":"2026-04-05T09:16:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T09:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/uncategorized\/ghana-must-pursue-vibrant-manufacturing-led-model"},"modified":"2026-04-05T09:49:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T09:49:47","slug":"ghana-must-pursue-vibrant-manufacturing-led-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/all-news\/ghana-must-pursue-vibrant-manufacturing-led-model","title":{"rendered":"Ghana must Pursue Vibrant Manufacturing-Led Model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Ghana. <\/strong> <\/span><b>Mr Augustus Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development, has called for a vibrant manufacturing-led economic model that creates value across the production chain for accelerated national development.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>He said the country consumed far more than it produced, a situation that was draining foreign exchange and limiting job creation.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tanoh made the call at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Kwahu Business Forum at Mpraeso Hills in the Eastern Region.<\/p>\n<p>He observed that many products that could be competitively produced locally, including garments, pharmaceuticals, processed foods, building materials and household items, were still being imported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo much of our economic activity remains concentrated in trading and import distribution. We consume more than we produce. Every container that arrives represents jobs we did not create and foreign exchange we did not retain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Citing data from the Ghana Statistical Service, Mr Tanoh said Ghana spent GH\u00a239 billion in 2024 importing food items such as rice, frozen chicken, sugar, cereals and animal offal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the Ghana Statistical Service, in 2024 we spent GH\u00a239 billion importing food items such as rice, frozen chicken, sugar, cereals and even animal stomachs and guts, products we have the capacity to produce locally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tanoh also expressed concern that Ghana\u2019s export structure had remained largely unchanged for more than a century.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that over 80 per cent of the country\u2019s exports still consisted of three primary commodities, a pattern similar to that of the early 20th century when Ghana\u2019s main exports were gold, timber and raw cocoa beans.<\/p>\n<p>He said the country\u2019s failure to transform into a production hub was depriving it of critical foreign exchange earnings and employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe earn foreign exchange from exporting raw materials and then spend it importing the very goods we could produce ourselves,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tanoh explained that the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development programme had been designed to reverse that trend by strengthening Ghana\u2019s productive capacity.<\/p>\n<p>He said the initiative sought to build production infrastructure in partnership with the private sector to enable Ghanaian businesses to manufacture, process and export at scale.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that government was working to establish industrial parks and shared infrastructure, including utilities and logistics systems, to significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tanoh therefore urged businesses and stakeholders participating in the forum to partner government to drive the country\u2019s industrial transformation and position Ghana as a competitive production and export hub.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 Kwahu Business Forum has brought together business leaders, investors, policymakers and entrepreneurs to deliberate on strategies to accelerate economic growth in the Eastern Region and across Ghana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-article-footer-note\">Find more news and analyses on <span class=\"ap-highlight-country\">Ghana<\/span> on the <span class=\"ap-highlight-brand\">Africa Press<\/span> website<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Ghana.
