Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Ms Mercy Jane Adorkor Pappoe, a Ghanaian triathlete, has called for deliberate efforts to groom more female athletes to ensure the sustainability and growth of the sport in the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

She said her greatest fulfilment would be to see more women take up triathlon and swimming to build continuity and strengthen competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot compete forever. I would feel more fulfilled if more women join triathlon and swimming so they can take over in the future,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

Ms Pappoe made the call after emerging winner of the women\u2019s swimming competition at the 2026 Vodza Easter Regatta.<\/p>\n

Despite her victory, she expressed concern over the low participation of indigenous women in the event.<\/p>\n

She described the situation as disappointing, noting that only one local participant competed, which diminished the excitement of the contest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been more fun if an indigene had won and I placed second or third. The most important thing is for the local people to participate to make the event more exciting for everyone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She therefore urged women in the community to develop interest in swimming and other related sports to boost female representation in future competitions.<\/p>\n

Explaining the discipline, Ms Pappoe said triathlon combined swimming, cycling, and running in a single race.<\/p>\n

She disclosed that she currently competed for Ghana at the national level and represented the country at the All African Games and the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about achieving greater success within the next two to four years but stressed the need to nurture more female athletes to sustain the sport.<\/p>\n

She also appealed for increased sponsorship and support from both the public and private sectors to ease the financial burden on athletes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe authorities are providing platforms, but more can be done. With support from individuals and organisations, athletes will not have to struggle for funding and can focus on training,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

Ms Pappoe added that with the right investment and encouragement, Ghanaian athletes could improve their performance on the international stage and win more medals for the country.<\/p>\n
