Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Mr Johan Tuitert, a Dutch fire expert, has visited Ghana to support efforts to reduce market fires and improve the operational capacity of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).<\/b><\/p>\n

The visit focused on practical solutions to recurring fire challenges and water safety issues, as well as strengthening emergency response systems nationwide.<\/p>\n

A statement issued by the GNFS, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said Mr Tuitert engaged with the Service to assess key operational constraints affecting firefighting and rescue operations.<\/p>\n

Mr. Tuitert, a Chief Fire Officer with more than 40 years of experience in the Netherlands, is recognised for expertise in fire service operations, training, and long-term safety strategy development.<\/p>\n

His visit was aimed at identifying areas for collaboration in firefighter training, emergency preparedness, protective equipment, and improved response systems.<\/p>\n

As part of his assessment, Tuitert visited selected beaches and swimming pools in Accra to review drowning prevention measures and water rescue readiness.<\/p>\n

He examined safety arrangements, availability of rescue equipment, lifeguard deployment, and response systems, identifying gaps requiring targeted capacity building.<\/p>\n

He also toured the Tema and Greater Accra Regional Headquarters of the GNFS, where officers outlined logistical and operational challenges affecting service delivery.<\/p>\n

Mr. Tuitert visited major commercial centres including Tema Community One, Ashaiman, Kantamanto, and Makola markets to assess congestion, access difficulties, and fire risks linked to dense trading activities.<\/p>\n

He was accompanied by his partner, Nana Benewaa, an international strategic partnership lead and entrepreneur, who supported coordination and collaboration efforts during the visit.<\/p>\n

Mr. Tuitert later held discussions with the Minister of Interior on potential partnership areas, including fire prevention in markets, staff training exchanges, improved logistics, and provision of protective equipment for firefighters.<\/p>\n

He also met the management of the GNFS, led by the Chief Fire Officer, Mrs Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, to explore cooperation in specialised firefighting, hazardous materials handling, operational planning, and drowning prevention.<\/p>\n

Mr. Tuitert commended Ghanaian firefighters for their dedication and resilience despite operational and resource constraints.<\/p>\n

He noted that market fires pose major challenges, including congested access routes, limited water supply, high fuel loads, and exposure to toxic smoke.<\/p>\n

Mr Tuitert stressed the need for stronger prevention systems and improved protective equipment to enhance firefighter safety and response effectiveness.<\/p>\n

Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, Chief Fire Officer, welcomed Mr Johan and Nana Benewaa, and expressed appreciation for their proposed partnership with the GNFS.<\/p>\n

She said Management would outline the Service\u2019s training and equipment needs and reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate.<\/p>\n

CFO Sapong said the partnership would strengthen water rescue operations, enhance personnel capacity, improve safety at incident scenes, and support the Service\u2019s mandate to save lives and property in the long term.<\/p>\n

As a gesture of appreciation, she presented two sets of GNFS sportswear to the couple.<\/p>\n

The GNFS acknowledged the roles of Lawrence Appiah Kubi and Daniel Asah in facilitating the visit and stakeholder engagement.<\/p>\n
