The occasion has also renewed calls for reforms to strengthen its role in upholding the rule of law and democratic governance in Ghana.

The milestone traces its origins to 1876 when the court was established under the Supreme Court Ordinance during the colonial era, laying the foundation for the country’s modern legal system.

At the time, the court functioned not as a final appellate body but as a combination of a High Court and a court of first instance, with ultimate appeals handled by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

Following independence in 1957 and the attainment of republican status in 1960 under Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the court evolved into the final court of appeal, assuming full judicial authority within the country.

Over the years, the Supreme Court has undergone significant transformation through successive constitutional arrangements, reflecting Ghana’s broader political evolution.

The most defining phase of its development came with the establishment of the Fourth Republic under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Under the current constitutional framework, the Court serves as the final court of appeal and the ultimate interpreter and guardian of the Constitution.

This role has placed the institution at the centre of Ghana’s democratic governance, particularly in adjudicating constitutional disputes and electoral matters.

Over the past year, the Court has played a critical role in resolving presidential election petitions and other high-profile cases, contributing to political stability.

Its decisions have reinforced Ghana’s democratic credentials and strengthened public confidence in constitutional processes.

Speaking ahead of the anniversary celebrations, Justice Richard Adjei-Frimpong, Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the Court’s journey and reposition it for the future.

He explained that the Court’s evolution could be understood in three phases: its early adjudicatory role during the colonial period, periods of disruption during military regimes, and its current status as an empowered constitutional body.

Justice Adjei-Frimpong noted that despite challenges, including political interference and constitutional suspensions during military rule, the judiciary demonstrated resilience.

He said the Court’s acquisition of judicial review powers marked a turning point, enabling it to act as a protector of the Constitution and a defender of fundamental human rights.

The Court has since delivered landmark rulings that have expanded democratic freedoms and enhanced accountability in governance.

However, the Supreme Court continues to face challenges that have sparked national debate about its effectiveness and independence.

One major concern is the perception of political influence in the appointment of judges, as the process involves presidential nomination in consultation with the Council of State and approval by Parliament.

While constitutionally grounded, critics argue that the process may create perceptions of executive dominance over the judiciary.

Another challenge is delays in the delivery of justice, particularly in constitutional and appellate cases, which can affect public confidence.

Resource constraints, including inadequate infrastructure and logistical support, also impact the efficiency of court operations.

There have been increasing calls for investment in judicial infrastructure and the adoption of technology to improve case management.

Public trust remains a critical issue, as perceptions of bias or inconsistency in judicial decisions can undermine confidence in the Court.

Justice Adjei-Frimpong addressed these concerns, explaining that as a policy court, some decisions may align with government positions without implying partisanship.

He emphasised that safeguards such as judicial codes of conduct, disciplinary mechanisms and internal deliberative processes exist to ensure fairness and independence.

The Court must also respond to emerging legal challenges, including cybercrime, digital transactions and complex commercial disputes.

These developments require continuous capacity building and specialised expertise within the judiciary.

Despite these challenges, the prospects for the Supreme Court remain strong, supported by constitutional guarantees of judicial independence.

Ongoing reforms and digitisation initiatives are expected to enhance efficiency and improve access to justice.

Justice Adjei-Frimpong announced that activities to mark the anniversary would include public lectures, legal outreach programmes, moot court competitions and engagements with jurists across Africa.

Other events are sporting activities, a grand durbar and a thanksgiving service.

The official launch of the celebrations is scheduled for April 2026, at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana.

The anniversary is being marked on the theme: “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Defining the Future.”

Justice Adjei-Frimpong called on Ghanaians to participate actively in the celebrations, describing the Supreme Court as a vital institution in the country’s governance architecture.

As Ghana reflects on 150 years of its apex court, the focus remains on strengthening its independence, efficiency and credibility.

For More News And Analysis
