Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong> <\/span>The Ghanaian government has announced a special support package for its citizens who have been evacuated from South Africa due to the recent surge in violence and hate speech against African migrants. The government confirmed that it will provide comprehensive care for returnees upon their arrival in the country.<\/p>\n

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that returning citizens will benefit from an integrated support program specifically designed to help them regain stability and reintegrate into society after experiencing what the government described as “racist attacks against foreigners” in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The Ghanaian Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated in a social media post that the government has established “a special support package for Ghanaians arriving on Thursday after being evacuated due to racist attacks against foreigners in South Africa.” He noted that the Ghanaian diplomatic mission in Pretoria is coordinating with South African authorities to arrange the evacuation process and ensure the safe return of citizens.<\/p>\n

According to the Ghanaian government, the package consists of five main elements aimed at facilitating the resettlement of returnees and alleviating the burdens associated with their sudden return. The plan includes a one-time “welcome grant” to help returnees meet their basic needs and settle in their home areas.<\/p>\n

The initiative also includes comprehensive transportation services to ensure citizens reach their homes and families across the country, along with a reintegration allowance intended to cover initial living expenses during the early period after their return.<\/p>\n

The package is not limited to financial and logistical aspects; it also includes the provision of psychological and social support services for returnees, in an effort to address the psychological effects of the violence and discrimination they faced in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Ghanaian authorities confirmed that these services include specialized counseling sessions and psychological support programs aimed at helping victims overcome the trauma caused by the assaults and the hostile environment against foreigners.<\/p>\n

The government also indicated that the final phase of the support program will involve registering returnees in a special database, allowing for the monitoring of their situations and providing necessary assistance in the future.<\/p>\n

Earlier in May, Ghana announced plans to evacuate approximately 300 citizens from South Africa following escalating protests and violence targeting foreign migrants, particularly those from African countries.<\/p>\n

At that time, the Ghanaian Foreign Minister stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo had issued directives for the “immediate evacuation” of affected citizens amid deteriorating security conditions and rising anti-migrant rhetoric.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, South Africa has witnessed an increasing wave of violence linked to xenophobia, targeting African migrants and foreign-owned businesses, raising widespread concern among several African governments, including Ghana and Nigeria, which issued official warnings to their citizens and called for measures to protect them.<\/p>\n

Ghana has urged the African Union to include the issue of violence against migrants in South Africa on the agenda of the upcoming AU meeting in June, calling for a collective African response to address the rising hate speech and violence against foreigners on the continent.<\/p>\n
