Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Abura Dunkwa, Dec.7, GNA\u2014 The absence of sign language teachers and braille materials for the hearing and visually impaired are affecting the teaching and learning of pupils living with disabilities in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese (AAK) District.<\/p>\n

The worrying situation has compelled pupils living with disabilities to coil back, a situation that was threatening their efforts to obtain quality education.<\/p>\n

This was disclosed by Ms Yvonne Anonadaga Kwarah, head of the AAK District office of the Social Welfare Unit, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.<\/p>\n

He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) was currently including PWDs in mainstream education for them to feel part of society and also prepare them for their tertiary education.<\/p>\n

Ms Kwarah, reiterated the need for the government to train more sign language teachers, to fill the gaps to enable these children to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.<\/p>\n

She took the opportunity to inform people living with disabilities to get registered with the district office to enable the district to make informed decisions concerning their welfare.<\/p>\n

She said 789 people have so registered but complained about the delay in the release of the Disability Common Fund, and the late disbursement of items to the beneficiaries in the district. The funds for the first quarter of 2021 was received in the latter part of November, a development, she said should be reversed.<\/p>\n

Emmanuel Morgan a basic five (05) pupil of New Odornase Basic School who is visually impaired, told the GNA that it was sometimes difficult for him to comprehend lessons without the use of braille.<\/p>\n

He, therefore, appealed to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO\u2019s), benevolent organizations, and the government to come to their aid to make learning enjoyable.<\/p>\n
