Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Coast, Dec. 09, GNA\u2014 More than 400,000 of the 1.1 million persons targeted by the Ghana Health Service in the Central Region, have taken the first shot of the novel Corona Virus vaccine to protect themselves against the pandemic, the Regional Health Directorate has hinted.<\/p>\n

Dr. Akosua Agyeiwaa Owusu Sarpong, the Regional Director, said about four million people in Ghana have received at least a dose of the vaccine. Briefing the press on the COVID-19 status of the Region, she said the roll-out of COVID- 19 vaccines in the Region, started in phases among segmented populations in March 2021.<\/p>\n

She said the initial phase of the roll-out targeted segmented populations who were most at risk of getting the disease such as the elderly, people with co-morbid conditions, and health personnel.<\/p>\n

Dr Sarpong said the GHS has expanded the vaccination exercise to the general population to achieve herd immunity and subsequently reduce the infection.<\/p>\n

To ensure that the target of vaccinating approximately 1.1 million people in the Region and 20 million people in Ghana was achieved, the Government, through the COVAX facility and other bilateral and multilateral agreements from various countries secured the COVID-19 vaccines which had been distributed to all districts.<\/p>\n

Declaring December as a COVID-19 vaccination month, she urged all to get vaccinated because it was the most effective way to protect oneself against COVID- 19 disease also prevent severe illnesses, hospitalization, and death.<\/p>\n

Dr Kwabena Sarpong, the Deputy Director of Public Health, said the Region had recorded 4907 cases of the virus with 31 death since it first hit in April 2020 till date.<\/p>\n

He said Ghana had 44 COVID-19 testing sites with five in the Region; two in Cape Coast, and one each in the Gomoa East, Awutu Senya East, and Assin Central districts.<\/p>\n

Challenges, he said with vaccination was the unwillingness of some community members to take the vaccines and appealed to the media as a key stakeholder, to help expel some misconceptions and clear rumors for society good.<\/p>\n

To bring the rate of transmission to its barest minimum, he said the GHS would soon engage traditional leaders, influencers and all other relevant stakeholders to help send the good message for the vaccination exercise to reach a good number of people.<\/p>\n

He further encouraged all to help the Government in the fight against COVID-19 by adhering to preventing measures and taking part in the exercise adding that it was ‘free and safe’.<\/p>\n
