Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Ningo-Prampram (Near Tema), Dec. 10, GNA \u2013 The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture have identified nine crops for development in the agricultural value chain. The crops are Cashew, Coffee, Cotton, Coconut, Citrus, Oil Palm, Mango, Rubber and Shea.<\/p>\n

The nine crops have been captured under the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) programme to create a sustainable raw material base to spur up the decentralized industrialization drive through the One District One Factory initiative.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Prince Ofori-Boateng, Acting District Director of Agriculture, Ningo-Prampram, urged farmers to venture into the Planting for Export and Rural Development programme.<\/p>\n

He said another initiative the National Tree Crop Programme also sought to promote rural economic growth and improve household incomes of farmers through the provision of certified improved seedlings, extension services, business support and regulatory advice.<\/p>\n

Mr Ofori-Boateng said the district received 2,500 mango seedlings and 1,000 coconut seedlings for 20 farmers in the first tranche of distribution. He said the District benefited from the Rearing for Food and Jobs Programme as a total of 50 pigs were distributed to ten farmers.<\/p>\n

Mr Ofori-Boateng said each farmer received a total of five piglets comprised of four females and one male, adding that the farmers were expected to pay back after two years to allow other farmers to benefit.<\/p>\n
