We even have some jewelry, beaded jewelry this year that’s like nothing we’ve ever had before, like rings and bracelets and anklets.”

And that’s not all. There are musical instruments, animal sculptures and even organic leggings. But customers won’t have much longer to shop in-person at the market this year, once it closes on Friday, Christmas Eve.“As far as the holidays is concerned, we sell a lot of holiday items,” Braden said. “Lots of Christmas ornaments, lots of nativity scenes, lots of gift items that would make perfect stocking stuffers. We sell a lot of kitchen items, table linens, baskets, wonderful home décor items.”

And outside of a few high-end items ― like a tall pair of bongo drums ― the most expensive items at the market average $35, with most of the items selling for less.

“A lot of people think fair trade, they think it’s going to be really expensive,” Braden said. “But really what we do is cut out several of the middlemen, and when the artisans create something they get paid a fair, living wage when the item leaves their hands, and it goes to a wholesaler usually who then sells it to us. But we keep our prices really reasonable.”

The Global Market is run by volunteers and is one of the primary fundraisers for the La’Angum Learning Center, located in northern Ghana. The school was the dream of Executive Director Emeritus Alice Azumi Iddi-Gubbels and provides a Montessori, pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade education for 275 village boys and girls in the rural region.

“I’m just in awe of what Alice and the other people in that community, the teachers, have done,” said Connie Monnot, who volunteers at the OKC market. “What I really like is that the children first learn in their own language and then learn English, so they’re speaking and reading in both languages. It’s a bilingual, hands-on developmental approach to learning. Education is very important to me, and the school gives the kids many opportunities to better their lives.”The proceeds of the Global Market, which all go to the Learning Center in Ghana, account for roughly 25% of the school’s fund every year, volunteers said.

But the past two years have been difficult due to COVID-19, and many of the artisans have seen fewer of their goods go to market. Braden is hoping that recent trends encouraging metro residents to “shop small and local” between Thanksgiving and Christmas will boost sales during a particularly trying holiday season.“And we’re also taking up a donated space, rent-free, and because of our non-profit status, we can’t really afford to take up retail space year-round,” Braden said. “But we tend to have pretty good luck going to the owner of an empty space around August and encouraging them to get a tax break by letting us move in and bring in a bunch of people, bring in a lot of customers, and make their building look better. It’s a vibrant, living store, and that tends to work really well.”

For More News And Analysis About Ghana Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Ghana.
