Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>As part of measures to inspire women studying science and technology to attain success, the Girls in Science and Technology (GIST) chapter at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Tarkwa has been launched.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the group intend to create more career opportunities for women in the various universities across the country. The Voltic-GIST empowerment campaign programme is on the theme: “Know your Potential.”<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch, the Founder of GIST, Ohemaa Adjei Andoh, said, “We want to create a community where our girls have blueprint role models to look up to, access to internship and mentorship opportunities.”<\/p>\n

She stressed that “We plan to take the students through a lot of training to help position them in the right places when it comes to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.”<\/p>\n

“Our plan is to create chapters in all the Universities because we want the girls to see value in themselves and know how to use that to their benefit,” the founder said.<\/p>\n

Ohemaa Adjei Andoh emphasized that although the STEM fields were a male dominated area; we want to change that narrative. We believe in showing representation and through that encourage our girls to do better.<\/p>\n

Madam Natalie Abena Adu, Technical Trainer at Voltic Ghana Limited, said, “Voltic decided to support GIST because we want to motivate women in science and technology industry to excel.”<\/p>\n

“Voltic believes in women empowerment, inclusiveness and diversity to increase the number of women we have especially in leadership positions,” she added.<\/p>\n

She encouraged the young engineers to look out for companies that offer graduate trainee programmes, adding that, “taking keen interest in internship was one of the best ways to launch your career because it provides extra training, on the job training, mentors and coaching sessions to help bring what you have learned in school into the real world of work”.<\/p>\n

Madam Rainer Juati, a Mine Planning Engineer at Gold Fields, said as women in an industry usually dominated by men, they should put themselves out, especially on the professional websites that would offer them better opportunities as engineers.<\/p>\n

Touching on time management, Madam Juati, advised the students to apportion their time to what was important and eliminate things that would not add value to their studies.<\/p>\n

Many of the students, who were present at the programme, expressed appreciation to the founder for initiating the programme\u202fto help create better opportunities for women. GNA<\/p>\n
