Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The Karymsky volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula, has spewed an ash column about 10 kilometres high, news agency Interfax reported on Wednesday morning, citing volcano experts from the KVERT research group.<\/p>\n

No ash falls were recorded in residential areas, the Kamchatka Ministry of Civil Defence told Interfax. The ash cloud spread in a north-easterly direction. Local authorities set the highest warning level for air traffic.<\/p>\n

According to local media, the volcano is 1,486 metres high. It is 120 kilometres north-east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and about 45 kilometers from the nearest town on the sparsely populated peninsula.<\/p>\n

The Kamchatka peninsula is home to around 160 volcanoes, but only around two dozen of them are active. The volcanic region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n
