Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span> Mrs Clara Lamisi Weobong, Field Programmes Officer of Healthy Cities for Adolescents (HCA) project, has called on the Government and other stakeholders to prioritise measures to promote hygienic and safe menstrual practices amongst adolescent girls.<\/p>\n

She said the Government and other stakeholders to commit resources towards providing period friendly facilities for adolescent girls to minimise incidences of infections and stigmatisation. Mrs Weobong made the call at an event in Tamale to commemorate this year’s International Day of Menstruation.<\/p>\n

It was to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management and brought together stakeholders and students from various basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis sensitising them on the need for menstrual hygiene.<\/p>\n

The event formed part of HCA project being implemented by the Regional Institute of Population Studies of the University of Ghana in collaboration with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly with support from Botnar Foundation among other partners.<\/p>\n

It seeks to build a multi stakeholder consortium with the capacity to use evidence-based information for strategic programming that promotes adolescents’ health and general well-being.<\/p>\n

Mr Amatus Tug-uu, Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, called for collaboration between government and non-governmental organisations to ensure the availability of facilities to help enhance the safety and dignity of young girls in school.<\/p>\n

Ms Abdul Rahaman Humaida, a student of Zogbeli Junior High School (Block A), commended HCA and partners, saying, “the programme has helped in addressing some fears about menstrual periods, and how to effectively use sanitary pads.”<\/p>\n
