Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>China\u2019s electric-car giant sees a potential advantage in producing lithium from its own raw materials projects.<\/p>\n<p>Stay on top of the electric car revolution by signing up to our Hyperdrive newsletter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/account\/newsletters\/hyperdrive\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/quote\/002594:CH\">BYD Co.<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nis once again the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/terminal\/RBQOC8DWRGG1\">largest shipper<\/a> of electric vehicles in the world\u2019s top market, after rivals including Tesla Inc.<\/p>\n<p>were disrupted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-31\/tesla-vw-keep-shanghai-workers-isolated-even-as-lockdown-eases?sref=iW3WrQuv\">Shanghai\u2019s lockdown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Warren Buffett-backed car producer is also working on plans to deliver a longer-term advantage over competitors, aiming to become more directly involved in the mining of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/articles\/2022-04-22\/mr-lithiumalr-warns-there-s-not-enough-battery-metal-to-go-around?sref=iW3WrQuv\">lithium<\/a>, the raw material that\u2019s crucial for EV batteries.<\/p>\n<p>In China, BYD is one of Elon Musk&#8217;s fiercest competitorsIn March, BYD agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/terminal\/R96PL7DWRGG1\">invest<\/a> up to 3 billion yuan ($449 million) in Chengxin Lithium Group Co.<\/p>\n<p>, a supplier that has projects and interests in China\u2019s Sichuan province and locations including Indonesia and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the auto firm won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/terminal\/R5LV99T1UM0W\">contract<\/a> to produce the metal in Chile, the world\u2019s No. 2 lithium producer.<\/p>\n<p>A Chinese media report last week suggested the automaker is dramatically accelerating this strategy by striking a deal to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;thepaper.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;cn\/newsDetail_forward_18350577\">six mines in Africa<\/a> capable of producing enough lithium for more than 27 million EVs.<\/p>\n<p>That could be sufficient to cover BYD\u2019s lithium demand for the next 10 years, according to the report by The Paper, a Chinese digital newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>BYD hasn\u2019t responded to requests to comment.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"desktop-in-article-1-RD1WHFDWX2QH01\"><\/a>BYD\u2019s reported shopping spree in Africa indicates the carmaker expects \u201ca prolonged lithium shortage\u201d, according to a note from Daiwa Capital Markets.<\/p>\n<p>Automakers are contemplating ever-closer involvement in their supply chains, including in the mining and refining of key battery metals, after a year of escalating costs that have pushed many manufacturers, including BYD, to raise sticker prices.<\/p>\n<p>One measure of lithium prices had an eye-popping rally of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/features\/2022-05-25\/lithium-the-hunt-for-the-wonder-metal-fueling-evs?sref=iW3WrQuv\">almost 500% in a year<\/a>, and metals remain elevated now, even with some early signs the gains are cooling off.<\/p>\n<p>EV battery prices are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-01\/battery-price-increase-could-keep-electric-cars-expensive-for-years?sref=iW3WrQuv\">expected to tick up<\/a> this year for the first time in more than a decade, and broader inflation could delay the point at which electric models are as affordable as conventional cars, according to BloombergNEF.<\/p>\n<p>Though Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/elonmusk\/status\/1512505545416224783\">tweeted<\/a> in April that Tesla \u201cmight actually have to get into the mining &amp; refining directly at scale,\u201d and said two years ago the company had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bloomberg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/articles\/2020-09-22\/musk-says-tesla-plans-25-000-electric-car-in-about-three-years?sref=iW3WrQuv\">acquired rights<\/a> to a lithium clay deposit in Nevada, the company has mainly focused on sealing future supply agreements with existing producers.<\/p>\n<p>Liontown Resources Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>, developing a project in Western Australia, confirmed on Monday it expected to begin shipping material to the carmaker from 2024.<\/p>\n<p>There are potential pitfalls for auto producers considering a leap into commodities production themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The mining sector has a patchy record of delivering projects as planned, a wave of resource nationalism is complicating developments in some key nations and ESG investors are closely scrutinizing extractive industries over potential environmental damage.<\/p>\n<p>Securing sufficient supplies of raw materials is likely to be \u201cthe biggest challenge for all automakers for most of this decade,\u201d Seth Goldstein, a Chicago-based equity strategist at Morningstar Research Services, told me last week.<\/p>\n<p>The best solution would be for carmakers to lock in more long-term agreements with the industry\u2019s major producers like Albemarle Corp.<\/p>\n<p>and Ganfeng Lithium Co.<\/p>\n<p>, which have the most ability to bring on new supply, Goldstein says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvesting in junior miners who have never produced lithium, or new technologies, is relatively more risky and could result in not being able to secure enough lithium,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Like getting this newsletter?
