Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched its 30th anniversary celebrations with a call on party members to stop the character assassinations.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch in Accra, today, Thursday, 28 July 2022, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, said the party must be united even as it prepares to elect its flagbearer and parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must stop the character assassination. When you undermine a party member, think of what happened to us in 1979 and 2008 when we lost the elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The chairman of the party, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, said as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary, the party will hold a thanksgiving Islamic prayer at the National Mosque tomorrow, Friday, July 29, 2022, and a Christian thanksgiving service on Sunday, July 30, 2022.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The NPP was officially formed on July 28, 1992.<\/p>\n

The NPP is a centre-right and liberal-conservative political party. Since the democratisation of Ghana in 1992, it has been one of the two dominant parties in the country, with its leading rival being the centre-left National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n

The NPP has contested every national general election in the country since the commencement of the fourth republic in 1992, with the exception of the parliamentary elections in that year.<\/p>\n

The Party is considered as an offshoot of the United Gold Coast Convention, which effectively evolved into the United Party in the late 1950s, the Progress Party in the late 1960s, the Popular Front Party in the 1970s and the All People\u2019s Party in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n

<\/a>According to Justin Kodua Frimpong, it is obvious that the current economic challenges have influenced the perception of Ghanaians.<\/p>\n

Ghana is currently going through a tough phase when it comes to finances. Following this, the government has been at the doors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to save the economy from a meltdown.<\/p>\n

A section of the country is reeling in discomfort, high standard of living, skyrocketing fuel prices and a depreciating currency. On July 26, an Afrobarometer study cited the governing party as being at the bottom of the category of trusted institutions.<\/p>\n

But JFK, as he is affectionately called, insists the NPP-led administration is working hard to restore the economy. He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of NPP\u2019s 30th anniversary on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know once we are able to reform and transform the economy, definitely confidence will go high,\u201d he explained to JoyNews.<\/p>\n

He believes this move will improve the lives of the citizenry and in turn, restore the trust in the party as an institution that has the country at heart.<\/p>\n

Acknowledging that \u201cI am in no position to doubt it,\u201d he sees the findings as another opportunity to prove its capability in the face of adversity. The Afrobarometer survey bordered on democratic governance, trust in institutions and corruption.<\/p>\n

The research sampled nationally representative respondents of adult citizens selected at random. The sample size of 2,400 people was distributed across regions\/states\/provinces and urban\/rural areas in proportion to their share in the national population.<\/p>\n

Fieldwork for Round 9 in Ghana was conducted from 4th to 20th April, 2022. The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched its 30th anniversary celebrations with a call on party members to unite to propel the party to victory in 2024.<\/p>\n

The General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, said as the party prepared to select parliamentary candidates and a flagbearer, it was important for the party members not to be at each others throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must stop the character assassination. When you undermine a party member, think of what happened to us in 1979 and 2008 when we lost the elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He pledged that the current national executives will act as impartial arbiters in the upcoming flagbearership race and primaries to elect parliamentary candidates. The NPP was officially formed on July 28, 1992.<\/p>\n
