Nike is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic sneaker by highlighting NYC<\/a> \u2013 a city that [arguably] put the shoe on the map and its diverse communities.<\/p>\n

If you travel in the Bronx near 167th Street, you know that it\u2019s an area locals call Little Accra. With more than 20,000 Ghanaian-Americans, The Bronx\u2019s Little Accra is reportedly<\/a> the largest enclave of the Ghanaian diaspora.<\/p>\n

Nike is paying homage to the thousands of Ghanaian immigrants residing in the Bronx and teamed up with the co-founders of Afrochella<\/a> to bring the warmth and community of Little Accra into fashion with its AF1.The shoe has satin hues of red, burgundy, yellow, and rust orange with embroidered tapestry.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Designers put spirited messages inside the shoes\u2019 insoles that read \u201cSharing Stories\u201d and \u201cBuilding Community.\u201d You\u2019ll also find the words \u201cLittle Accra\u201d in a graffiti style to add that \u201cBoogie Down Bronx\u201d flavor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beauty of the community in The Bronx is that people have brought their homes way from home to New York,\u201d says Abdul Karim Abdullah, CEO & Co-Founder of Afrochella. \u201cFrom the African markets to the restaurants to the community centers \u2013 anyone from Ghana won\u2019t feel far from home in The Bronx.\u201d<\/p>\n

And this isn\u2019t the first time Nike has shown love to Ghana. Most notably, the brand has collaborated<\/a> with the late Ghanaian-American designer Virgil Abloh since 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis collaboration opens Nike\u2019s eyes to opportunities within the continent and marginalized communities supporting the brand,\u201d Abdullah tells Travel Noire. \u201cIt creates an opportunity for generations after me to fathom the possibility of having their own shoe \u2026 something I never even dreamed of before it happened. It also firms the need for storytelling and authenticity.\u201d<\/p>\n
