Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>here is no need for citizens to be alarmed over South Africa<\/a>\u2019s water<\/a> scarcity, as a total water<\/a> outage will not happen in the near future, assures Water<\/a> and Sanitation<\/a> Minister Senzo Mchunu.<\/p>\n

While there are water<\/a> scarcity concerns in different parts of the country, South Africa<\/a> will not run out of water<\/a>, he says, pointing out that the Department of Water<\/a> and Sanitation<\/a> (DWS) is working towards ensuring water<\/a> security<\/a>.\u201cI can state, categorically, that we do not have an immediate threat of water<\/a> outage. However, this does not mean we are not a water<\/a> scarce country, and that people should not use water<\/a> sparingly.<\/p>\n

“We do not have an immediate water<\/a> crisis so to say, but we should not lower our guard,\u201d Mchunu told delegates during the Water<\/a> Institute of Southern Africa<\/a> Biennial Conference and Exhibition.While calling for prudent water<\/a> use by all water<\/a> users, he highlighted the work and interventions the DWS was undertaking in water<\/a>-strained communities such as the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan.<\/p>\n

However, private partnerships are needed to strengthen efforts toward realising a water<\/a>-secure country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a need to increase participation of private sector partnerships through finance and skills enrichment in the water<\/a> sector. Besides this, we are strengthening our role in regulating, supporting and intervening in municipalities where municipal water<\/a> and sanitation<\/a> services<\/a> are deteriorating, linked to the reinstatement of Blue, Green and No Drop regulatory monitoring tools,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

DWS is also prioritising hands-on monitoring of progress with all major projects<\/a> which have been historically delayed, including the Giyani water<\/a> project<\/a>, the Vaal River intervention project<\/a>, Hammanskraal water<\/a> quality concerns as well as the Umzimvubu and uMkhomazi water<\/a> projects<\/a>, besides others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe department is ensuring planning of projects<\/a> in financial<\/a> years before they are to be implemented, so that they are ready for implementation when the financial<\/a> year starts. We have also developed an Infrastructure<\/a> Procurement Strategy in line with the National Treasury Framework for Infrastructure<\/a> Delivery and Procurement Management. This is done to enable smarter, quicker and more effective infrastructure<\/a> procurement and we will be implementing the strategy over the coming months,\u201d he concludes<\/p>\n
