Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has presented a total of 180 fruit tree seedlings to the 2 Battalion of Infantry of the Ghana Armed Forces at Apremdo under a European Union funded project dubbed \u201cTwin Cities in Sustainable Partnership\u201d being implemented in Sekondi-Takoradi and Palermo in Italy.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Abdul Mumin said the metropolis was planting fruit trees as part of the project to support the government\u2019s Green Ghana Agenda to address environmental degradation, food security and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on livelihoods at community level.<\/p>\n

He said about 5,000 fruit trees would be planted and nurtured throughout the metropolis <\/a>this year adding \u201canother 5,000 seedlings will be planted next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said so far almost all the tertiary institutions and some selected institutions have planted fruit trees and this would be continued, to sustain the environment and food security.<\/p>\n

Mr Mumin said fruits were excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals with the high fiber content these fruits possessed thus a wide range of health-boosting antioxidants<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He said eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables could reduce people\u2019s risk of developing heart disease, cancer, inflammation and diabetes.<\/p>\n

The Commanding Officer (CO) of 2BN, Lt. Col. Daniel Atobrah Bondah receiving the seedlings said they were an integral part of the community and should never be left out in the developmental agenda of the nation.<\/p>\n

He said as security personnel they were not only to see to the security of the country but environmental security played a major part of the survival of the human race so people must not limit the duty and responsibility to only the protection of lives and property or physical security.<\/p>\n
