Former President Jerry Rawlings with President Nana Akufo-Addo<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assigned Former President\u00a0Jerry John Rawlings to lead a government delegation at the\u00a0funeral of the late Former Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The delegation includes\u00a0deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Charles Owiredu, a nephew of the late Sally Mugabe, Mr. Queesy Ninsin-Imbeah, and officials of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.<\/p>\n

This was made known in a statement dated Friday, September 14, 2019 and released by the Communications Directorate of the seat of Government, Flagstaff House.<\/p>\n

The delegation left Accra on Friday, September 13, 2019 and are expected to be in Harare on Saturday, September 14, 2019 for the final funeral ceremony of the first President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, whose first wife was a Ghanaian, Sally Mugabe.<\/p>\n

They are expected to return home soon after the funeral.<\/p>\n

Mugabe died in Singapore aged 95.<\/p>\n

Mugabe had been battling ill-health and President Emmerson Mnangagwa told a Cabinet meeting two weeks ago that doctors had \u201ctaken him off life support.\u201d<\/p>\n

He became the first prime minister of the newly independent Zimbabwe after elections in February 1980.<\/p>\n

Articulate and smartly dressed, Mugabe came to power commanding the respect of a nation. He had a strong head start, inheriting a country with a stable economy, solid infrastructure and vast natural resources.<\/p>\n

Mugabe, ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, was being treated in Singapore since April.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
