A latest report by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has predicted an upset for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, Former President John Dramani Mahama.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the report, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by President Nana Akufo-Addo will retain power come the 2020 polls.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur forecast that the 2020 polls are the NPP’s to lose remains unchanged\u201d parts of the report reads.<\/p>\n

Using Ghana\u2019s improved macroeconomy as its lenses into the 2020 elections, the EIU says \u201cit will be difficult for the NDC under Mr Mahama to portray itself as the better custodian of Ghana’s economy\u201d<\/p>\n

Since handing over a real GDP of 3.5 in 2016 to NPP management, Ghana\u2019s economy has recorded 6.3 in 2018 and is predicted to finish 2018 on 6.4 before dipping to 5.5 in the election year, the EIU predicts.<\/p>\n

The \u201cfairly strong\u201d outlook on the economy, it said will outdo the NDC\u2019s chances.<\/p>\n

The report mentions possible weakness in the NPP election machinery, highlighting voter apathy and a disgruntled base who may feel left out on political opportunities as 123 ministers remain the main beneficiaries of these opportunities.<\/p>\n

It also mentions that the NPP parliamentary primaries if not well managed may led to disaster.<\/p>\n

Outside the party, the general concern remains job creation with the government still chalking \u201cpatchy\u201d successes with its industrialization plans, the EIU says.<\/p>\n

But these weaknesses nonetheless, the NDC needs to present a \u201ccoherent opposition\u201d and target the \u201cunfilled campaign promises\u201d of the NPP mainly on jobs, the EIU says.<\/p>\n
