{"id":3954,"date":"2019-09-29T14:24:54","date_gmt":"2019-09-29T14:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/ghana\/?p=3954"},"modified":"2019-09-29T14:24:54","modified_gmt":"2019-09-29T14:24:54","slug":"xenophobia-obasanjo-advises-nigerians-evacuated-from-south-africa-to-return-to-the-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/all-news\/xenophobia-obasanjo-advises-nigerians-evacuated-from-south-africa-to-return-to-the-country","title":{"rendered":"Xenophobia: Obasanjo advises Nigerians evacuated from South Africa to return to the country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in the Rainbow Nation to get ready to go back saying he&#8217;s confident the meeting between President Buhari and Cyril \u00a0Ramaphosa, next month will yield a positive \u00a0outcome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obasanjo who spoke\u00a0on Saturday, September 28th\u00a0in his Abeokuta residence said\u00a0Buhari and Ramaphosa should be ready to make the right statements that would encourage the Nigerians who returned home to go back to South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by reporters\u00a0what he discussed with Ramaphosa last week, he said,\u00a0\u201cI took the opportunity of being in South Africa to actually pay a courtesy call on President Cyril Ramaphosa and he quickly granted me the opportunity.One of the major things we discussed was this issue of xenophobia or Afrophobia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President told me that there was so much at stake and whatever mistake we had made, we had to correct it. And I think that was a very good statement and I know that he meant it, because he immediately said \u2018what can we do or should we do?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Obasanjo also advised South Africans to tread softly on the issue of foreigners seeking opportunities in\u00a0their country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of thinking or saying that foreigners are taking your jobs\u00a0should be killed, because most of these foreigners paid something into the country. I met more than two Nigerians who are doing legitimate businesses and the turnover runs \u00a0into millions of dollars \u00a0and they employed 50 to 60 South Africans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll these must be expressed and must be shown that Nigerians in South Africa are not drug peddlers and \u00a0criminals; there \u00a0are many of them that are genuine businessmen and professionals and who are making meaningful contributions \u00a0to the economy and the social life of that country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that is all we must be doing and be saying and \u00a0my joy is that President Cyril Ramaphosa is ready to do what needs \u00a0to be done to stop these \u00a0incidents and to put the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa on the right track. One of the things they are going to do between South Africa and Nigeria is that \u00a0they are going to have what we established during \u00a0my tenure \u2013 that we called \u00a0bilateral commission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0Nigerians evacuated from South Africa, Obasanjo said, \u00a0\u201cI hope \u00a0they will \u00a0go back to the South Africa from what I heard from President Ramaphosa. Like I \u00a0said, the meeting that President Buhari and President Ramaphosa will have during the \u00a0first week of October should smooth the ground.
