Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>It\u2019s been days of struggles with water from an overflow of the Volta Lake which swept through communities in the Central and East Gonja Districts of the Savannah Region.<\/b><\/p>\n

The life of a young man believed to be in his early 30s was lost with several properties destroyed.<\/p>\n

Over 10,000 people have been affected by the unfortunate incident from the two assemblies.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of homes have also been inundated with water and properties worth millions of Cedis destroyed.<\/p>\n

Kojo Kumasa is one of the victims who has been hardly hit by the floods.<\/p>\n

His four-bedroom house, farmlands and livestock have all been lost to the floods.<\/p>\n

He tells, he is still suffering the brunt of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation for us is worse since the incident. No place to sleep, no clean water to drink and no work to do because our sources of livelihoods has been affected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Feeding has become a challenge for the victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cI go to bed on empty stomach with my family. Our children are getting malnourished and its a matter of concern to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

He fears there could be a possible outbreak of waterborne disease as they have been compelled to drink from the lake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe drink from this dirty water because the Lake swept through the community and carried all the dirt along. The color of the water is greenish because we even defecate in the water but we have no option.\u201d<\/p>\n

He expressed concern over what they described as neglect by government and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why it\u2019s difficult for government to respond to our plight. No one is saying anything. Are we not Ghanaians?\u201d he quizzed.<\/p>\n

Maltiti Foundation on Friday, October 20 presented food items to victims within the Makango area.<\/p>\n

The items included bags of maize, rice and cooking oil.<\/p>\n

Executive Director of the Foundation Hajia Fauzia expressed concern over the struggles of the victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cFeeding has become a problem for this people as they continue to struggle to feed. Maltiti foundation has done its bit and I appeal to everyone out there to come in to support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former President John Mahama, MP for Yapei-Kusawgu John Jinapor, Savannah Regional NDC chairman Alhaji Imoro Man Blessing and the Savannah regional minister have all made donations to affected victims in Central Gonja District.<\/p>\n
