Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>A \u20ac980,000.00 bus terminal built by the Agence Fran\u00adcais de Developpement (AFD) to ease congestion on the Lake Road has been abandoned.<\/b><\/p>\n

Located at Chirapatre in the Asokwa Municipality, the terminal\u2019s construction formed part of the 3.2km Oforikrom-Asokwa by-pass and 2.7km lake road improvement projects, funded by the AFD.<\/p>\n

The bus terminal was construct\u00aded to relocate the drivers who have occupied the frontage of the Kumasi South Hospital.<\/p>\n

It is furnished with parking lots, passenger stands, among others, to serve all long distance buses from Lake Bosomtwe and the Central Business District at Adum.<\/p>\n

A deadline given by the Asokwa Municipality for drivers to relocate to the terminal had fallen on deaf ears for almost a year now.<\/p>\n

This came to light during a visit by the French Embassy in Ghana, led by the Deputy French Ambas\u00adsador, Julien Lecas, in the company of officials from the Department of Urban Roads, to the facility on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The visit also enabled the offi\u00adcials inspect the uncompleted road projects.<\/p>\n

Mr Lecas told newsmen in an interview that he was hopeful the bus terminal and road works would \u201cput the people in a good condi\u00adtion of life\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a big pleasure for the French Embassy to be here to see the projects. This is a new step to reinforce the partnership between France and the people of Kumasi and Ghana as a whole. It is hoped that the facility will be put into good use,\u201d he intoned.<\/p>\n

Mr Akwannuasa Gyimah, Asokwa Municipal Chief Execu\u00adtive (MCE), on his part noted the development was very unfortunate.<\/p>\n

The Assembly, he said, was engaged in broader stakeholders\u2019 consultation on the possible opera\u00adtion of the terminal.<\/p>\n

According to him, the Assembly was putting up a market close to the bus terminal and was hopeful that would compel the drivers to move there, when completed in May 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Assembly is not resting on this matter, we are doing all possible to ensure the facility is put to good use,\u201d he indicated.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Director of the De\u00adpartment of Urban Roads, James Amoo-Gottfried, said the AFD Mumais Roads and Urban Devel\u00adopment projects was focused on improving the Oforikrom-Asokwa by-pass and the 24th February Road Junction road which run through Anloga to the Aboabo river and Lake Road.<\/p>\n

He said the Lake Road Improve\u00adment project also started from the Asafo Cement Roundabout in the North, leading to the Asok\u00adwa interchange, adding that \u20ac25 million and GH\u00a27million would be expended on it.<\/p>\n

Mr. Amoo-Gottfried thanked the French Embassy for the support and appealed for more funds to complete some complimentary roads<\/p>\n
