Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Players in the telecommunications industry have paid GH\u00a26.07 billion in taxes and other payments to gov\u00adernment for the year 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n

The amount is over 50 per cent increment of the GH\u00a24.02 billion paid in 2021.<\/p>\n

The contributing telcos are AT, MTN, Vodafone, ATC, Helios, Comsys, CSquared, Ericsson, and Huawei.<\/p>\n

This was made known by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommu\u00adnication (GCT), Dr Kenneth Ash\u00adigbey, at the launch of the 2022 Mobile Industry Transparency Initiative report held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 in Accra.<\/p>\n

According to Dr Ashigbey, the industry\u2019s contribution constitutes approximately 8.02 per cent of the government\u2019s 2022 tax reve\u00adnue of GH\u00a275.71 billion per the 2022 annual report of the Ghana Revenue Authority.<\/p>\n

The breakdown of tax contri\u00adbutions included Corporate In\u00adcome Tax (CIT), GH\u00a21.27 billion, representing 42.6 per cent, valued added tax, GH\u00a2 923 million, and withholding tax GH\u00a2697 million.<\/p>\n

The rest are communication service tax, GH\u00a2511.6 million and GETFund, NHIS and COVID-19 levies, GH\u00a2768 million amongst others.<\/p>\n

On the controversial electronic transfer levy (E-Levy), the Cham\u00adber said there was still the need for further revision in the E-levy rate to align it to government\u2019s digital drive by default strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur recommendation to the Ministry of Finance is to consider reducing the levy on transfer to 0.5 per cent and introduce a 0.5 per cent levy on cash-outs among other proposals,\u201d the GCT said.<\/p>\n

The chamber emphasised the vital role of the telecommunica\u00adtions industry in socio-economic development and said it shouldn\u2019t be taxed as other industries like alcohol and tobacco industries.<\/p>\n

Dr Ashigbey said the amount paid to government constituted 46.31 per cent of its revenue for the year; down from 47.69 per cent t in 2021, indicating an unsustainable burden that needs addressing.<\/p>\n

Despite contributing a signifi\u00adcant 2.27 per cent to the country\u2019s Non-Oil GDP, Chamber noted that the telecom industry bears a \u201cdisproportionate tax burden\u201d, contributing 7.28 per cent of government\u2019s tax revenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis inequitable differential militates against government\u2019s effort to transform the nation\u2019s economy and urged that the in\u00addustry is viewed as partner rather than a pot of tax because elevated taxation levels have significantly impacted the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was important, he said, that the industry was viewed as a pivotal force driving the develop\u00adment of other sectors including agriculture, education, health care, manufacturing, government, rath\u00ader than to be considered as the \u201ccash-cow\u201d that is overly taxed.<\/p>\n
