Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The Minority in Parliament is kicking against a regu\u00adlation seeking to restrict the importation of rice, fruit juice, margarine, sugar and 18 other products the govern\u00adment considers \u201cstrategic\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

It argued that apart from the policy being in violation of World Trade Organisa\u00adtion practices, it would drive inflation.<\/p>\n

He also expressed worry that with the development, traders might not get the license to import products if they did not have ties with the ruling party.<\/p>\n

The caucus for the third day running, blocked the laying of the Legislative Instrument, Restrictions on Importation of Selected Strategic Product Regula\u00adtions, 2023 on Friday over lack of quorum.<\/p>\n

Per the regulation any person seeking to import the selected products would require the exclusive per\u00admission of the Minister of Trade.<\/p>\n

But addressing journal\u00adists in Parliament on Friday, Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Baah Forson said the policy would only promote cor\u00adruption in the importation space.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are urging the Pres\u00adident to have a rethink be\u00adcause this is not a policy that we should encourage and they have to withdraw it,\u201d Dr Forson, MP, Ajumako\/En\u00adyan\/Esiam entreated.<\/p>\n

According to Dr Forson, a Justice Ollenu Committee established in 1967 corrup\u00adtion and malpractices relating to import licensing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they had created do\u00admestic production for some of these items, we would have no issue.<\/p>\n

But clearly, we know they want to restrict sugar but we do not have a sugar process\u00ading plant.<\/p>\n

The one that Mr Mahama actually constructed, this government is refusing to open it so where is the sugar going to come from?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they are seeking to do is to create businesses for their financiers,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

The list of items under consideration include rice, guts, bladders and stomach of animals, poultry, animal and vegetable oil, margarine, fruit juices, soft drinks, min\u00aderal water, noodles and pasta, and ceramic tiles.<\/p>\n

The rest are corrugated paper and paper board, mos\u00adquito coil and insecticides, soaps and detergents, motor cars, iron and, steel, cement, polymers, fish, sugar, cloth\u00ading and apparel, biscuits, and canned tomatoes.<\/p>\n
