{"id":60960,"date":"2023-11-30T06:49:16","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T06:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/?p=60960"},"modified":"2023-11-30T04:42:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T04:42:30","slug":"presidency-denies-claim-president-silent-on-criminal-offences-amendment-bill-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/all-news\/presidency-denies-claim-president-silent-on-criminal-offences-amendment-bill-2023","title":{"rendered":"Presidency denies claim president silent on Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Ghana. <\/strong><\/span><b>The Office of the President has denied media reports accusing the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of remaining silent on the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin said the bill was officially submitted to the President for his assent on Monday, as such could not be accused of being silent on it.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2023 two other bills, the Wildlife Resources Management Bill, 2023 and the National Petroleum Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023 were also submit\u00adted to the President on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, is reported, on Monday, to have \u201crebuked Akufo-Addo over \u2018silence\u2019 on the Criminal Offenc\u00ades Amendment Bill.\u201d It is important to state at the outset, that the amendment is specifically designed to outlaw the roles of witch doctors or witch-finders, in addition to prohibiting the act of declaring, accus\u00ading, naming, or labelling an individual as a witch, alongside other related matters.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the claims made in these re\u00adports by the Speaker of Parliament and the Minority Caucus in Parliament, President Akufo-Addo has not remained silent on the bill,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement questioned why the Speaker of Parliament would accuse the President of remaining silent on the bill when the bill was officially presented to him on Monday, November 27 from Parlia\u00adment, the same day the Speaker made the accusation?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, the bill was officially presented to the President for his assent together with the Wildlife Resources Management Bill, 2023 and the National Petroleum Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023, under cover of a letter dated Novem\u00adber 27, 2023, with reference PS\/CS\/112\/826,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement therefore said \u201cIt is, thus, wholly inaccurate that the bill has been sitting on the desk of the President without receiving due attention.
