Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>A Constitutional Lawyer, Justice Srem-Sai has said that the courts must determine whether the social media accounts of all agencies rendering public service such as the Ghana Police Service, can block individuals from accessing those social media accounts.<\/b><\/p>\n

He charged the Attorney-General to start thinking about legislation regarding state agencies blocking persons from accessing their social accounts.<\/p>\n

Access to information, especially from state bodies such as the Police, he said, is a fundamental right like education and freedom of speech.<\/p>\n

Therefore, blocking individuals from accessing the information without first seeking a court order raises serious questions that the courts must settle.<\/p>\n

In a post on his X platform, Justice Srem-Sai said \u201cAccess to @GhPoliceService social media accounts is a fundamental human right \u2013 to information, education, freedom of speech, association, and, even, to life.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, one interesting question which the courts of Ghana may have to answer next year is this \u2013 whether the social media account of the Police Service (and, for that matter, of any other public service) may block a person without, first, obtaining a court order; and, if so, under which circumstances, and for how long. Alternatively, the Attorney-General, if he\u2019s not too busy doing some other things, would have to start thinking about legislation on the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
