{"id":6546,"date":"2019-12-02T13:33:47","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T13:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/ghana\/?p=6546"},"modified":"2019-12-02T13:33:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T13:33:47","slug":"hajia-fati-violated-adom-fm-reporters-fundamental-human-rights-high-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/all-news\/hajia-fati-violated-adom-fm-reporters-fundamental-human-rights-high-court","title":{"rendered":"Hajia Fati violated Adom FM Reporter&#8217;s Fundamental Human Rights &#8211; High Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The High Court, Human Right Division has delivered judgment in the case brought against staunch governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter Hajia Fati and the party\u00a0for the assault on Adom FM\u00a0reporter, Akosua Sakyiwaa aka Ohemaa.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The court held that Hajia Fati violates the fundamental human rights of the reporter to free expression in the exercise of her profession as a journalist it awarded a total of GH\u00a29000 against her \u00a22000 being punitive damages for her reprehensible conduct. According to the Court, her action is a threat to media freedom which ought to be punished to serve as an example to others who may be minded to interfere with media right freedoms.<\/p>\n<p>The court observed that protection of such rights and freedoms was critical to a properly functioning democracy. Hajia Fati came\u00a0under a barrage of criticism in May last year after she assaulted the reporter\u00a0when she attempted taking a photo of her at the party\u2019s headquarters in Accra.The party loyalist had earlier prevented Sammy Crabbe, a suspended Vice Chairman of the party from picking up forms to contest for the party\u2019s chairmanship position.<\/p>\n<p>She subsequently explained that she thought the reporter was a member of Sammy Crabbe\u2019s camp who had been sent to take pictures for ulterior motives. According to her, the reporter looked like an \u201conion seller\u201d not a\u00a0journalist as she had come to learn.<\/p>\n<p>However, after being critiqued by the public and some members of her party, Hajia Fati has rendered an apology to Ohemaa and the entire journalism fraternity for her behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The tearful Hajia said \u201cI am on my knees please forgive me. I plead with you all, I am sorry, I am sorry\u2026it won\u2019t happen again.\u201d Ruling on the matter, the High Court,\u00a0declined to fix joint liability on the NPP saying the party had shown that Hajia Fati did not act in its instruction and this was evident in the party\u2019s open condemnation of the assault.<\/p>\n<p>The Court, however,\u00a0noted that she had shown remorse and rendered apologies for her conduct.<\/p>\n<p>A criminal trial of Hajia Fati is still ongoing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The High Court, Human Right Division has delivered judgment in the case brought against staunch governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter Hajia Fati and the party\u00a0for the assault on Adom FM\u00a0reporter, Akosua Sakyiwaa aka Ohemaa.
