Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>President Akufo-Addo\u2019s ministerial reshuffle may not have satisfied many critics of the ruling government who have laid the collective blame for Ghana\u2019s ailing economy at his doorstep.<\/b><\/p>\n

The President, through a press release from his office on Wednesday, February 14, announced major changes to his government.<\/p>\n

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has finally been relieved of his position after months of pressure from Ghanaians following the deteriorating state of the economy, high cost of living, general hardship and Ghana\u2019s ballooning debt which has led to the economy being downgraded by international rating agencies.<\/p>\n

Many Ghanaians are beginning to question the timing of this reshuffle and whether indeed, its only meant to appease Ghanaians or enable the government regain popularity.<\/p>\n

In the words of the Minority caucus in Parliament \u201cThese injury time reserves, who have been on the bench for more than seven years without warm-up, cannot make any meaningful impact in the remaining nine (9) months to salvage the sinking ship and the massive economic mess created by Alhaji Bawumia and his economic mismanagement team\u201d.<\/p>\n

Minority describes cabinet reshuffle as \u2018injury time remix\u2019<\/p>\n

In an apparent reference to the current serving Ministers, some of whom have been at the helm of their respective ministries for more than 7 years, nothing concrete should be expected of them especially when they have been sidelined for many years by the President.<\/p>\n

The release from the Minority in a typical literary sense, likens the NPP government to a boat which is sinking due to excessive corruption, but has almost no time to salvage the crew members on board.<\/p>\n

The Minority, by inference, is therefore doubting the sincerely of government by refusing to take full blame for state of affairs.<\/p>\n

Fellow at CDD Ghana, Kwame Sarpong Asiedu on his part likens the government to an elephant who is playing a football game and down by 3 goals to nil in an extra time of only two minutes left.<\/p>\n

Kwame Sarpong wonders if this new team can claw back anything with just 10 months to a crucial general election.<\/p>\n

He wrote, \u201cI hear there has been a number of substitutions in team Elephant with a change in formation as well. Sadly, we are 2 minutes into 4 minutes of injury time with team Elephant down 3:0. Can the new team claw things back?\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding to this post, another critic of the government, H Kwasi Prempeh wrote, \u201cElection season gimmickry, not about governance. As usual, they are thinking about themselves and their future, not about you and me. I long gave up on these people!\u201d<\/p>\n

Come February 27th, 2024, when the President is expected to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA), many will be looking forward to the details and purpose of this reshuffle and whether the Vice President will continue to play a \u2018supervisory\u2019\u2019 role as head of the E\u0308conomic Management Team pending the outcome of the December 2024 general elections.<\/p>\n
