The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency in the Ashanti Region has criticised the government for failing to adequately resource the office of the Attorney General (AG) so it could effectively execute its mandate.<\/p>\n
According to K. T Hammond despite frequent complaints from Members of the House to resource the AGs office, government has failed complied.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice is not seen as an infrastructural framework so somehow, the system doesn\u2019t really measure the weight that it brings into the development of our democracy.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut these institutions play important roles because when there is no peace in the country there won\u2019t be any peaceful rest for anybody in this country,\u201d he said when addressing the house on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Mr Hammond divulged that out of the \u00a2135 million approved by the house in 2019, only \u00a296 million has been disbursed and that is hampering the AGs effectiveness.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year when we complained they were able to disburse only \u00a296 million out of the \u00a2135 million allocation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat crime has the Attorney General\u2019s office committed?\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n
Also speaking on the matter, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu asked the House to ensure that at least one percent of the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA) is dedicated to the AGs office.<\/p>\n
\u201cMr Speaker, this Parliament must also stop the pretence, if we want to help the Attorney General we can and we should demonstrate it as a House,\u201d he charged his fellow Parliamentarians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
