Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The Electoral Commission (EC) has admitted to the technical challenges it faced at some of the registration centres on the first day of the limited voter registration exercise ongoing across the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

The exercise, which was originally scheduled to start at 7 a.m., witnessed a significant delay due to the late arrival of registration equipment, network connectivity challenges and an erratic power supply (dumsor).<\/p>\n

The Commission in a statement on Tuesday, May 7, noted that \u201cfollowing our monitoring of the Voters Registration Exercise this morning, we observed some technical challenges with internet connectivity in a number of our Centres.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis delayed the start of the registration at a number of the Registration Centres,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy to note that by 12pm, the technical issues in most of the Registration Centres had been resolved. Consequently, the Registration Exercise is proceeding smoothly in almost all the Registration Centres nationwide,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Commission will continue to monitor the Registration Exercise and promptly address any issues that may arise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission is seeking to register about 623,000 first-time voters onto the electoral roll in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise across the country ahead of the December 7 national elections.<\/p>\n

The 21-day exercise, which commenced on Tuesday, May 7 in all 258 district offices of the Commission, is expected to end on Monday, May 27, 2024.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Commission has set up additional 785 centres to cater to individuals who may have difficulty accessing the EC\u2019s district offices.<\/p>\n

Also, 25 public universities have been included as registration centres.<\/p>\n

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has emphasised the importance of compiling a credible voter register as election 2024 beckons.<\/p>\n

She said that without a credible voter register, there can never be transparent elections.<\/p>\n

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Monday, May 6, ahead of the 2024 limited voter registration exercise, Jean Mensah said the EC is poised to deliver a credible and transparent election.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a commission, we remain poised and ready to deliver credible, transparent and peaceful elections and electoral processes starting with the 2024 registration exercise.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is well known that the voters register is a bedrock of an election. Without a credible and accurate voter register, there can be no transparent and acceptable elections,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n
