Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged Ghana\u2019s Electoral Commission (EC) to replace voter ID cards of persons affected by the recent Akosombo dam spillage at no cost.<\/b><\/p>\n

At a press conference on Thursday, May 16, the party\u2019s General Secretary Mr. Kwetey emphasized the severity of the issue and demanded that the EC act to act with promptitude and compassion.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me use this opportunity to make this demand of the Electoral Commission on the replacement of lost voter ID cards. From May 30, the EC is expected to provide cards at no cost to the victims of the flood that happened along the Volta River and the lake. This is a demand, not a plea,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

The party said it is making this demand from the EC because of its \u201cstaunch advocates for democracy and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among other things, Fifi Kwetey also highlighted broader concerns regarding the EC\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n

The NDC has also called for an independent bipartisan parliamentary investigation into the EC\u2019s handling of sensitive equipment, citing the theft of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits that were under surveillance at the EC headquarters and the unexplained disappearance of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe insist on the initiation of an independent bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into the conduct of the EC, particularly focusing on the stolen BVR kits which were under CCTV surveillance at the EC headquarters and the mysterious disappearance of BVDs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed, the EC\u2019s actions in the coming days will signal its commitment\u2014or lack thereof\u2014to upholding the democratic process in Ghana. We will accept nothing less than full accountability and immediate remedial action to restore faith in our electoral process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
