Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>The presidential convoy is reported to have been involved in an accident on a return trip from Kumasi to Accra.<\/b><\/p>\n

One of the drivers is said to have died in the incident. Several others have sustained severe injuries.<\/p>\n

However, President Akufo-Addo is said to have arrived safely in Accra by air.<\/p>\n

The accident is said to have occurred around the Bunso junction in the Eastern Region.<\/p>\n

Reports say the convoy crashed into a KIA Rhino truck.<\/p>\n

A statement issued by the Director of Communication at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, has confirmed the incident.<\/p>\n

In the press release dated May 19, Mr arhin wrote, \u201cOn Sunday, 19th May 2024, several vehicles belonging to the President\u2019s convoy were involved in a fatal accident along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway. The unfortunate incident occurred whilst the convoy was on its way back from Kumasi, after accompanying the President to Kumasi for a series of events this weekend.<\/p>\n

Tragically, one of the drivers, Mr. Kwesi Atta, has lost his life. Additionally, several close protection and police officers from the President\u2019s security detail have sustained varying degrees of injury and received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.<\/p>\n

The injured persons are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation. Several vehicles in the convoy have also been completely wrecked as a result of the accident.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the President is safe and unharmed, as he travelled to Accra via military<\/p>\n

aircraft. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers. Further details will be communicated as we continue to assess the situation. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n
