The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated its opposition to the Electoral Commission\u2019s move to compile a new biometric voters register, saying it is illogical.<\/p>\n
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said the new register \u201cdefies logic and must be fiercely resisted as we in the NDC intend to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
The EC has asked Parliament to approve GH\u00a2444,846,663 for the compilation of a new voters register which it believes will be more credible and efficient than the existing one.<\/p>\n
The commission also says there is the need to replace outmoded biometric machines.<\/p>\n
However, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah argued that the current register has proven reliable enough on the evidence of the District Assembly Elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current voters register was used to successfully elect about 6,600 district assembly members and about 33,000 unit committee members. Yet the Electoral Commission is telling us that the same register cannot be used to elect one person and 275 Members of Parliament.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current register was the one that was used to elect Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP into office,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In addition, he highlighted the novelty of an opposition party backing an older voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not complaining. In fact, we are saying that let us use the same register so that given the state of the shenanigans that were played by the NPP in 2016\u2026 we will see whether they can win again.\u201d<\/p>\n
EC\u2019s explanation<\/p>\n
The Director of Elections at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe justified the move saying there was a need to tackle verification challenges that occur on Election Day.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have made it very clear that the current biometric system is not good enough for future activities. We are having a lot of challenges with it. In addition to that, a lot of people have found it difficult to have their fingerprints picked up by the machine so we intend to introduce the facial recognition [option] in addition so that if your fingerprint fails, your image will be used for verification.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, also clarified that the said amount is not only for the procurement of equipment but to among other things cater for the full cost of undertaking a fresh registration exercise.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe amount we are talking about is the total cost of registration, recruitment and what have you. So it\u2019s not only for the equipment and software. So that amount shouldn\u2019t be perceived only for the equipment. So whether we upgrade or not, we will still incur the cost of registration.
